20. THE NECESSITY TO EXAMINE ONESELF
(The Lord) – So then do act accordingly; make every effort and check everything to see whether you have forgotten something, so that in the end you will not have to say: Look here, I have now done everything for a full ten or twenty years that the new teaching directed me to do, yet I am still in the same spot and feel within me no special enlightenment or a so-called eternal life! What is still lacking?
That is why I tell you: Check very carefully to see whether some strong thoughts of worldly advantage have not assailed your heart, whether temporal arrogance, a certain too extreme thriftiness – a younger sister of avarice – ambition, sense of judgment, bossiness, salaciousness and the like have not captured your heart and thereby also your soul! As long as that is the case for one or another, he will not attain to the promise, that is, to its complete fulfillment for him.
Look at the cider and the pure wine in a keg or a skin, full of spirit. As long as the cider contains coarse and foreign particles, it will ferment and not achieve any purity; but as soon as these are eliminated, it becomes more and more quiet in the keg and the cider clears and becomes pure wine, full of spirit.
Many a person is not far from attaining to the Kingdom of God within his soul, yet if he does not examine himself to see whether something material still clings to his soul, he will not succeed. On closer self-searching he may find that he is still very touchy and easily hurt by some trifle.
49] Here, I am saying nothing else except: Although you have learned enough of the other horrible situations, you may well be satisfied to know that in your countries it is hardly better. However—regardless of this—the conditions are still shaped in a way that the one who has good intentions finds simply no hindrance to be better, to act better, and to do good.
50] A paradise on this earth does not exist anywhere, neither physically and spiritually at the same time.
51] Still, anyone can reach it [paradise132] in the Spirit, if he only wants it; although there is still darkness in some countries, it does not hinder the case; even if the darkness of the night has settled gravely over the valleys and mountains, they will be unable to do anything once the sun has began her ascend.
52] However, it is only bad in such countries where there is absolutely no way of freedom, as in underground vaults, chasms, and passageways. There, thousands of suns may rise instead of one, yet their light will not be able to penetrate any sooner into such crusted depths until the beam of the highest degree of burning light has transformed the earth all the way down to the centre [core] into ether. (The 12 Hours – Tenth Hour)
EVOLUTION OF SOUL-LIFE ON EARTH UNTIL MAN. LOWER AND HIGHER ANIMAL LIFE
I said to the innkeeper: “My dear Mucius, exactly in those 3 questions that you ask are contained the whole wisdom of all the Heavens and the reasons of My work as teacher on this Earth. No matter how many times I talked about this, the basic teaching cannot be frequently repeated enough so that the spiritual heart of man will completely absorb those eternal truths in himself, will well digest them in himself and in flesh and blood will entirely transform them. Therefore, I will profoundly answer your questions, firstly for the sake of you and Phoikas since you are still foreign to My teaching, and secondly for the sake of My followers
who are already with Me for a long time but who still did not penetrate into all truth. So listen carefully.
Man lives from 2 kinds of worlds which he has to unite in himself. On the one hand he is the cornerstone of the outer,
material creation in which he is called the crown of creation and he is praised as such. On the other hand he is the starting point of the pure spiritual world which with him has reached the first stage of complete free self-awareness. So, on the one hand he is the beginning and on the other hand the end of a chain, and he has to find in himself, by his for that purpose given life and the free development, the right link with which he can make those 2 chains as one. I will explain this further to you.
All beings, from the smallest creature, form step to step ascending series, in such manner that one step will always complete the other, will show greater perfections and can by that also develop an ever greater intelligence.
Look at the animals where lower sorts exist that seem to have no other goal than to maintain their body and serve as food for other animals. When there is an enemy of their body and life, they stoically surrender to their fate and do not fight back and are also not capable to do that. Look at the many insects and lower amphibians.
" The full second and well distinguishable higher degree of vision and feeling of the soul takes place in the physical life as well as in the dream when the spirit in the soul becomes just as active as the spirit of a plant in the grain of seed when it started from its actual soul, resting in the flesh of the grain, to form and to let grow the roots in the soil and the little leaf germs above the soil. Then the soul begins to unfold to a real form and penetrates on the one hand in itself, just like the roots of a growing plant are penetrating into the soil and begin to suck in the right food from the godly power in it, while on the other hand the plant itself, thus fed from the inside – as a result of that inner feeding from the pure, true and living godly power – will in the sphere of light lift itself up and develop itself higher and further to the ultimate completion as the actual and real form of the being of the soul.
But all this happens by the continuously increasing activity of the spirit in the soul, which will by this unite more and more with the soul. In this condition of the soul, his vision and feeling is no more a vague sensing but already a light and clear becoming aware of all life conditions and of the relation in which they are to his own life.
In this second and higher degree of vision, man knows himself and also God, and he can then also vision the spirits of respectively the souls of the already deceased ones as well as the still living people in the flesh and also see how they are. The visions of such a person will then not be material and unreal, but spiritual, pure, true and consequently real, and there will only be little difference between the clear seeing in an awakened condition and that of the bodily sleeping condition of a person.
